Side-effects
Dr dear Dr: How is the best way of looking at the way forward on the subject of the vaccines and of the public health debates of recent weeks and months, now that the huge vaccine industry has made a raft of public breakthroughs and broken the back of the Covid scare, reducing what was a pandemic to the bare bones of a mere epidemic? Is there any guidance from the Bible to regulate this huge science project and to keep it wrestled within the parameters of a philosophy of reason as we apply the vaccines to the public body and seek out a new framework for such issues and decisions with regard to co-relative rights?
Glad to say that at the time of writing, as some MPs are saying, we have all but broken the back of this pandemic by now, apart from occasional cases like Jen Psaki in Washington. But anyway. New Law. Indeed, actually, there is a nice quote from the Bible that applies very adroitly to the new situations of the public health invocations of the Human Rights Act 1998, and that is a quote from the Old Testament - "God made the world simple, mankind's complex problems are his own devising." Proverbs. But let us briefly recall that this whole area is brand new - never before have people argued from the Human Rights Act to issues of public health, but nevertheless surprise surprise, there it all is, as Priti is conscious of this too, plus Ella, there are now ways of arguing about the HRA that involve issues of public health, and it is all there to be read and studied and analysed in the Preamble to the HRA, where it states that as a concession from the European Convention of 1950, local national governments are certainly permitted to restrict individual human rights say to associate or socialise or party or drink in public or whatever, by recourse to 3 grounds - national security, public morals, or public health, so it is all out there. So public health is a legitimate ground for restricting rights. Now as for vaccines, there are a few now slowly being made available with a few coming on line soon with approvals from the MHRA:
Oxford - 100m - exp - avail;
Pfizer - 40m - rel clear - avail;
Novovax - 60m - clear, pending;
Valneva - 60m - clear v clear, pending;
GSK - Glaxo - 60m - exp, pending;
Janssen - 30m - clear, pending;
Moderna - 7m - exp - avail;
Sputnik 5 - Israel has ordered a total cover - avail;
Sinovax - exp - avail;
Johnson & Johnson - pending - with lawsuits resolved worth $800m;
Mir-19 - pending;
Sputnik Light - pending;
Ivermectin - clear, pending;
Sinovac - clear - avail.
So the prioritisation for the doses in the UK involve a cascade down the most urgent cases:
1. Care Home Residents;
2. All over 80s;
3. All over 75s;
4. All over 70s;
5. All over 65s;
6. 16-64 with health problems;
7. All over 60s;
8. All over 55s;
9. All over 50s;
10. All over 40s.
While there are some little petite camera obscura debates among moral theologians about the agency of taking these vaccines at the moment, chiefly by such fine tuned theologians as @OnTheSideOfTheAngels, all of these vaccines have had approval from the supremo in the Church, Papa Bergoglio; plus some discussion from the Chief Theologian atop the CDF Cardinal Ladaria, plus approval with regard to remote agency from the Cbcew in London under Cardinal Vin, so we are all good to go for the generality of the population unless an isolated individual has serious allergies or complex medication that forfeits their right to the vaccines, something to recuse from, and pace those few conscientious objectors whose rights remain sacrosanct at this stage of proceedings. Remember it is not for the Church to take away a person's free will say by making such public health decisions for them, they remain sacrosanct in their consciences which nobody can desume from them. Generally speaking, the position of the officialdoms of the Church Catholique is quite simple but nuanced - God in his provident care has inspired scientists to produce vaccines for the generic commonality of the human race in order to liberate the human race from these dangerous scourges, so it is not for us to complain too much of the minutiae behind each vaccine - that seems to be the pope's position as of the time of writing at pontifex at Twitternet. Agency debates remain debates - they are not that important.
But, and here we are obliged as journalists to introduce a caveat - I am always struck myself, as we celebrate that anniversary one year ago today of the passing into life of the great icon of 007s, Sir Sean, who battled on bravely on some fairly impossible frontiers of his own as a defender of all things Scottish in his private life outside of the golden screen as 007, that while we are supposed to defend and extend monarchies all around Europe in our Edinburgh based Royal Over Seas League, many of whose members are de facto 007s in their own right, not saying it is just a cover or phantom NGO for 007s or anything, nevertheless sometimes the occasional republic and its respect for the people as the people, as a political given, in society, means that a republic can produce good health policies for the people. Witness by way of example a republic not far from us in the Western Sea Empire which recently on the 29th October 2021 issued a public notice to the patients attending its various vaccination centers and surgeries. On this Notice it reads - Thank you for coming along to the Vaccination procedures and do note by way of information that there are some - rare - side effects to these vaccines which will require you signing a disclaimer, though you retain the right to report any such side effects to us if you experience such. Registered and reported side effects attached to these vaccines include the following:
1. Headaches;
2. Menstruation problems among those identifying as women;
3. Bell's Palsy;
4. Blood clots;
5. Heart Attacks or Strokes;
6. Sudden Death.
This is a public information leaflet which can be obtained electronically through the official website for the Health Product Regulation Authority at www.hpra.ie. Thank you for your understanding. So this somewhat surprising Public Notice proves to us that in public health emergencies, republics can be very useful, just for information purposes, keeping the public informed of concerns and worries rather than hiding them under the bathroom mat, but especially in their attitude toward the people, in their sense of responsibility to the people, and in their accountability to the people. People as perople, people as persons in their own right. Normally outside of that republic, over here, few people are informed about the possible side effects of the vaccines, though most people in Britain are aware of maybe one side effect, Number 4 with regard to Pfizer and No 2 with regard to Oxford, still it shows that a republic will be a little bit more open with its people. They are a lesson in manners to us all. They also show us that sometimes it is perfectly acceptable to be open and honest in such emergencies, given the important disclaimer that the vaccines as originally developed by girls like Sarah Gilbert were only emergency vaccines in any case, and could never be gilt-edged guaranteed to be free of incipient teething problems. We have apostles of a largely wide-eyed and innocent health service tootling around these Midlands dioceses at times trying everybody for being a little fearful and reticent about the vaccines, and they do the NHS a disservice by imposing it all carte blanche on everybody without exception - vaccines are good for the commonality and the generality but they cannot be good for every single individual - every rule admits of exceptions. The HPRA over yonder in Ireland has shown that it is possible to be very simple and open with people, namely to trust in the common sense of the people. The rest is history. But if you would like a copy of the Health Service Bulletin this can be obtained from the websites of the HPRA over yonder. Nice gesture, nice to see the common sense of the people respected and fully too. Bravo to the Irish VHI insurance guided Health Service in which the local GP gets a cash tip every time he sees a patient - we have a lot to learn from such people-loving and doctor-loving republics.
